The New Year is here and now is the time to implement new goals at your salon or spa. Creating a plan, and sticking to it, will help your business’s success.

Before you get started, it’s important to look at what you have achieved in the past year. Did you meet or surpass your goals for 2015? If not, perhaps you set your goals too high or there was a lack of follow through.

Here are five easy-to-implement goals that will help your salon or spa thrive in 2016:

  1. Set smaller, realistic goals.
It may seem silly to set a goal about setting goals, but this is a big one. It can be frustrating to set unrealistic goals and fall short of them. Setting goals that are unrealistic from the beginning is a major reason as to why many salons and spas don’t follow through with their goals.

If you want to increase your client base and bottom line, create attainable goals. Setting monthly or quarterly goals will help make reaching your end-of-year goal easier.

For example, if the FOV for your salon or spa is 5 times a year per client, aim to increase it to 6 or 7. Increasing your FOV by 1 or 2 visits is a realistic, attainable goal.

Evaluate all your data.
As a salon or spa owner, you should always be organizing and updating your data. How many guests came into your business this month? What percentage of clients chose to rebook an appointment? This data is important to collect, so you can improve on it in the future.

If you have a reliable business management tool such as Millennium, you will be able to collect client information such as their contact details, favorite services, rebooking habits, and more. Leverage this data when creating attainable goals.

  1. Use social media more.
Use social media channels to engage and strengthen relationships with your clients, as well as build new relationships. Choose 1–3 platforms, like Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest, to focus on and post consistently. Use rich content, like before and after pictures, behind the scenes images, and inspirational quotes to create engagement and capture your audience’s attention. Don’t be pushy; tell a story to strengthen your image.

Work on your website.
Many salons and spas have either no website or their site is outdated. Either way, you could be losing out on sales and new clients if you don’t keep your website up to date.

Bottom line: You should maintain the appearance of your website, and if you don’t have one, consider creating one. This can mean a complete website redesign, or maybe a few tweaks such as changing your menu or logo. A revamp can really make a difference and give your brand a fresh look. Perhaps your rates or contact details need to be updated as well. If you have the time, add a blog to your website and share the content with your social media followers.

  1. Stay focused.
It’s not enough to set goals, you must make a significant effort to reach those goals. Be proactive and set deadlines for your milestones to help achieve your goals. It’s easy to get distracted or discouraged, but don’t let that defeat you, keep going. One of the best ways to stay focused is to limit distractions, such as chatting with co-workers when you have to get inventory done.

Think about what it is you set out to do. If your goal is to increase your revenue this month, focus on rebooking and selling gift certificates or increasing retail sales.

Work Hard, Get Results

As a business owner, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily operations of running your business. Take some time to reevaluate your process of doing things and consider changing your current theme. Make resolutions that you can keep and suit your business. Your level of success will depend on you and your team’s hard work and dedication.

Start the New Year strong! Make 2016 a year of success and excellence. Distinct yourself from the competition and show clients why you deserve to be their favorite service provider.
