We’re six days into the year, and you’ve probably heard the phrase “new year, new you” too many times to count. So, enough of the cliche, let’s talk about your goals for the New Year.
Did you know? Research suggests that only 8% of people achieve their resolutions each year. While that number is kind of sad, there are some things you can do to make sure you accomplish all of your goals this year. Here are 3 ways to stick to your resolutions:
1. Keep it tangible.
You will be more likely to achieve goals with tangible elements than a goal that is too broad. Get specific with your goals—it will help you track your success!
Instead of “I want to make more money,” try “I will focus on nurturing my current clients to increase their visits each year.”
Instead of “I want to increase my skill set,” try “I will attend at least two hair shows or industry education events this year.”
Instead of “I want to be a better boss,” try “I will always thank my employees for a job well done.”
2. Create affirmations.
Say it out loud: I will accomplish my New Year’s resolutions. Now say it ten times and write it on a post-it next to your bathroom mirror.
Affirmations are a great little trick to help you achieve your goals. They are positive phrases that you repeat to yourself, which describe how you want to be and what you want to accomplish. The theory is that when you first start saying your positive affirmations, they may not be true, but with repetition, they sink into your subconscious mind. After time, you really start to believe them, and eventually, they become true.
A year is a long time. A lot can happen throughout the year. Set a few reminders on your calendar now to automatically check-in with yourself a few times throughout the year. Just a little “how’s it going?” from “future you” may go a long way in helping you to stick to your goals throughout the year.

This can be done by staying connected through social media groups, joining communities (both online and/or meet-up groups), or even subscribing to newsletters.
