Happy Healthy Aging Month! Working in the salon and spa industries can be physically demanding, so it’s important to pay attention to your health in order to avoid serious complications in the future. Your body knows best, and it’s important to listen!
Wondering where to start? Here are some tips to stay healthy:
Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.
Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for your body. Dehydration can cause adverse effects on the body such as fatigue, digestive issues, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, skin disorders, and much more.
Before you grab that cup of coffee: Drink a glass of water! Drinking water first thing in the morning will get your body on the right track for the entire day. Try waiting at least two hours after you wake up to drink your coffee. While it sounds almost impossible, this is the optimal time for your body to process caffeine.
Tip: Adding things to your water such as citrus juice (lemon, lime, grapefruit) or chia seeds will help give you that extra boost you need to get your day started.
How much water to aim for: As a general rule of thumb, you should be consuming half of your body weight in ounces of water each day.
If water isn’t your thing: Try fruits and veggies with high water content such as cucumbers, celery, strawberries, and watermelon to stay hydrated while snacking throughout the day.
Try Protein Before Sugary Caffeinated Drinks
It’s the inevitable afternoon lull – 3:00pm and you’re ready to grab that energy drink in order to avoid a serious crash. The problem is, while an energy drink will give you that instant boost of energy, you’re setting yourself up for a steep decline later. Instead, try eating foods rich in protein. Protein will give you sustained energy throughout the rest of your day, without the consequences.
Snacks to try:
- Raw nuts & nut butter
- Hard boiled eggs
- Greek yogurt
- Chicken and turkey
Rest Your Body
While exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, when you’re on your feet all day, rest is equally important. When resting after a long day, try elevating your feet. This will help get the blood circulating through your legs, helping to revive and restore after a hard day’s work.
Recharge Your Mind
A healthy mind is just as important as a healthy body, and mental breaks are necessary in order to avoid burning out too fast. Be sure to take time out of your day to take a step back, unplug, and relax. Having trouble sleeping? The blue light that emits from your phone, television, and other devices sends a message to your brain that it’s time to wake up. Try making the hour before bed screen-less. This will help your mind wind down and prepare for a restful sleep.
Every Little Bit Counts
Changing your lifestyle isn’t easy, but little conscious changes will go a long way in the end. Need a little extra push? Teamwork helps provide the extra support and motivation. Try working together with your salon or spa to reach new healthy goals.
